The Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM features an advanced optical design and an 11-blade circular aperture to deliver attractive bokeh. Its optical construction includes two XA (extreme aspherical) elements that help to correct field curvature and most types of aberration, along with an ED (extra-low dispersion) element that reduces chromatic aberration and delivers sharp images with no distortion.
The FE 50mm F1.4 GM also features Sony’s Nano AR Coating II, which suppresses reflections, and a fluorine coating on the front element that makes it easy to clean. Additionally, the lens barrel is dust and moisture-resistant, making it a reliable companion for all types of weather conditions.
High-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors handle the autofocus system, ensuring that the FE 50mm F1.4 GM is both fast and accurate. When using the autofocus system, the lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.41m, with a magnification of 0.16x, while in manual focus mode, the focus distance reduces to 0.38 meters, and the magnification rises to 0.18x.
The lens is designed to be equally at home shooting video or stills, with a clicking aperture ring for stills shooters that can be de-clicked for video. A switch also allows you to lock the aperture into or out of the ‘A’ position, passing aperture control to the camera.
The new lens uses a pair of XD linear motors to drive the focus, making it autofocus up to 1.9x faster than the original Sony/Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA from 2016. This new lens is also smaller, lighter, sharper, and less expensive than the ZA version, featuring 14 elements in 11 groups, including two ‘extreme aspherical’ elements and one extra-low dispersion (ED) element. It also has an 11 rounded-blade diaphragm and can focus as close as 0.38m (15″) in manual focus mode, giving a maximum magnification figure of 0.18x.
Although the lens exhibits some focus breathing, causing a narrower field-of-view at close focus distances, it is supported by Sony’s Focus Breathing Correction feature on recent cameras. This feature crops-in video to the tightest field of view and maintains it even as the focus moves towards infinity.
Like other GM lenses, the 50mm F1.4 has been designed to be dust and moisture-resistant, ensuring that it will be a reliable and robust tool for photographers in all conditions.
